Religious School Teachers

Deborah Stern Harris - Pre-Confirmation (8th-9th Grades) Debbie is the Technology Coordinator at the Sager Solomon Schechter Middle School in Northbrook and has been teaching religious school for over thirty years. A student in the Spertus College Master of Arts of Professional Jewish Studies program, Debbie speaks often on the topic of integrating technology in Jewish education and will be incorporating some emerging technologies into this year's class. She co-chaired the technology track of the 33rd Conference for Alternatives in Jewish Education and blogs at http://www.museforjews.com. Debbie has been a long-time Lakeside member andhas two daughters, Lori (an assistant English professor at Oakton College) and Allie (a third-year student at HUC in LA). Debbie is the proud recipient of the 2011 Grinspoon-Steinhardt award for Excellence in Jewish Education.

Darin Argentar has been extremely involved in the Jewish Community and in education in Chicago for many he years.  He attended and staffed at Olin Sang Ruby Union Institute as well as attended, staffed and directed at Shorashim (Israel Programs) for many years.  In 2008 he received his MSW from The University of Chicago, and currently practices at the JCFS Therapeutic Day School in Rogers Park.  Darin is extremely excited to be back for his fifth year teaching 4th Grade and his 3rd year teaching Kitah Bet at Lakeside. He currently lives in Vernon Hills with his awesome wife Alex and three children Orli, Ilana, and Shai.

Gidon Berman's early childhood was spent in the Netherlands, before making aliyah
and spending most of his life in Israel. Gidon completed junior high and high school in Be'er Sheva. He graduated from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev with a B.A. in Geography and an M.A. in Geography and Environmental Development, while teaching, tutoring, and managing computer labs. Moving to Central Israel, Gidon served as Tel Aviv-Yafo's planning coordinator of schools. Returning to academia, he graduated from the University of Chicago with a Master's in Public Policy. Following employment in transportation and population research, Gidon now freelances as a business consultant and a teacher of Hebrew and Judaic Studies. He is the leader of the Greater Chicago Hebrew Language Meetup and a board member of Community Partners for Affordable Housing. Gidon and his wife live in Highland Park, where they raise a son and daughter.

Marina Shubin moved here from Israel ten years ago to receive a BS degree in Psychology from Loyola University Chicago and MA degree in Psychology from National Louis University. Prior to living in Israel, Marina grew up in Russia, moving to Israel when she was 9 years old. Marina has been a teacher at Lakeside for ten years and has worked at several other area synagogues, Jewish institutions and public schools, in both formal and informal settings. This year Marina is very excited to work with the students in 6th grade and Kitah Bet and knows that it will be a great year.

Sheri has taught at Lakeside for over 20 years.  She has worked in the public schools in Deerfield for 20 years as a social worker and has her M.A.from the University of Chicago. She enjoys working with our K-1st grade students on Sunday mornings. She lives with her husband, David, and their sons, Zachary and Jonathan, in Northbrook. Sheri loves traveling, reading, spending time with family and friends, baking and going to the theatre!

Lynn Darin and her family have been members of Lakeside for over 15 years. She has been teaching second grade for more than 10 years, and continues to be inspired  working with young children. During the week, Lynn teaches in an early childhood program in Highland Park. She enjoys reading, gardening, and traveling. Over the last 10 years, she has been fortunate to have traveled to Israel on two study trips.

Karen has taught at Lakeside Congregation for 21 years. Karen is currently working on her endorsement in teaching English as a Second Language. In her free time, she continues to be an active member of Jewish Big Sisters organization. She also enjoys being an active member of her son Arthur's Preschool PTO. Karen lives with husband, Dan, Arthur and dog, Lucy.

David Valentine has taught at Lakeside for more than 20years. David has worked here so long that he has changed careers since he first started working here. David has a Master*s in social work and is now working as a computer consultant. David lives in Northbrook with his wife, Luci, their children, Fletcher and Dana, and their dog, Zorro.  He enjoys talking about current events and ethical dilemmas with his students. When he's not teaching he runs triathlons and marathons and in October he will be running his 8th Chicago Marathon.

Anita and her family have been members of Lakeside for almost twelve years. This will be her sixth year teaching seventh grade, having taught third grade and Confirmation class previously.  Anita celebrated becoming a Bat Mitzvah six years ago, so she can easily relate to the challenges many of her students will face this year. She was a member of Lakeside’s Board of Directors for 4-1/2 years, is currently on the Ritual Committee and co-chairs the Sisterhood Shabbat Service. She is an attorney by profession and, in addition to teaching at Lakeside and being Mom to two teenage boys, is a swimming instructor at the Highland Park recreation Center. She loves history and travel. She has spent an extensive amount of time in Israel
