Refugee Project

In the fall of 2016, Lakeside Congregation - along with over 360 other congregations across the United States - opted to participate in HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) to advocate for refugees and to sponsor and assist a family coming to Chicago. Over the summer of 2017, we welcomed Makanja and Bobasha, two young men from the Congo who were living in a Tanzanian refugee camp. Having spent their whole lives in refugee camps, they were not familiar with the many aspects of our day-to-day lives that we often take for granted - running water, electricity, transportation, and more.

As their co-sponsor (along with HIAS Chicago), Lakeside furnished and setup an apartment for Makanja and Bobasha, and worked to mentor, tutor and support them during their transition.
